The Keys to a One Virtual, All Virtual Workforce

Once upon a time, an entire company department decided to downsize to save money while keeping valuable talent. Everyone in the department worked in the same office until the President said it was time for a change. The President decided it was time to adapt to the needs of quality talent before they defected to a competitor.

With the end goal in mind, the department embarked on a journey to create a combined workforce. This workforce would comprise both virtual and in-office workers, spanning the entire organization.

The transition was challenging, but each manager was charged with identifying the best talent available, regardless of an employee’s work location. The departmental goals were never about sticking to fixed numbers, that is, a set number for in-office work and another set number for remote work; instead, they were about creating the best combined workforce based on the ideal relationship fit, whether in the office or virtually.

Because of the goal, one department’s leadership took a bold leap and used this statement as their compass: One virtual, all virtual. When put into action, this meant everyone attended calls using Google Meet, with cameras on; it didn’t matter that multiple team members were in the exact location.

The ability to see everyone’s face simulated an in-person meeting. One virtual, all virtual, further translated to a decision that if one person wished to speak to another, Google Meet cameras were on.

Because of One Virtual, all virtual, the leadership set out to establish a sense of community by:

  • Institute weekly check-in calls. During these calls, everyone shared their authentic selves, fostering a warm and connected environment.
  • Celebrate achievements like birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones, making everyone feel appreciated and recognized.
  • Dedicated monthly one-on-one calls between the employee and their immediate supervisor.
  • Dedicated and calendared semi-annual calls with the department head.

All of the above comprise the cornerstone for lasting and authentic situational relationships, which are no different from those established through hard work and collaboration.

And in the end, at the end of one year, that team of twelve shared with their leadership that despite their teammates’ locations, they had developed one of the strongest team relationships of their careers. A human resources study revealed that the output level and the team’s overall performance were among the strongest in the organization.
